Hi,

I am *very* happy to have found a very collaborative ng!

I will take profit of this by posting an old question that
has always caused headaches to me and my teachers ;-)

Suppose I'm going to the unique airport of Rome, Fiumicino,
to catch a plane. What is the difference among the following
statements? Which are right and which are wrong?

1) I'm going to the airport of Rome.

2) I'm going to Rome airport.

3) I'm going to Rome's airport.

4) I'm going to the Rome airport.

5) I'm going to the Rome's airport. (I know this one is wrong).

Grazie, ciao

Alessandro

To mt point of view (native English-speaker from London) any of 1 - 4 appear
technically correct, but 1 & 4 sound very stitled. The forms in 2 & 3 are
both used, but 2 is the most-used.

I suppose, though, that (2) should really be Rome Airport and that it
should be the proper name of the airport. It seems to be acceptable to
treat English translations of proper names as proper names in
themselves - and to use "______ Airport" as a proper name even if an
airport has actually adopted some fancy title. (4) would seem okay in
some contexts e.g. if one didn't know the name of the airport and was
just using "Rome" as an adjective or was contrasting the airport with
other facilities.

My step-daughter's boyfriend was recently due to collect her from
"East Midlands Airport" and rang us to ask if he should follow
directions to "Nottingham Airport". We said he should. It's recently
been renamed although it's not actually in Nottinghamshire. In some
senses it's always been "Nottingham's airport" and "the Nottingham
airport". Now it's officially "Nottingham Airport" (well...
"Nottingham East Midlands Airport" to avoid further offending the good
people of Leicestershire who suffer its noise.)

All wrong! These questions fail for not being specific.
There are *two* Rome airports. Airport codes CIA and FCO
http://www.italyfarmhousesrental.com/Information/Italian_airports.htm

This is a commonplace as the Cut Price operators fly to small airports a
long way from the city named.
