AITITB, a friend's grandfather, a native Yiddish speaker and not a native
English speaker, kept kosher but regularly ordered pork fried rice in
Chinese restaurants... when asked about this, he said "Rozbif! Is rozbif!"

I could write, 'it would be an awfully long Saturday -- 3 hours each
way or so, and what with the highway being under construction, not
really worth the candle' -- but then I would be falling prey to more of
what you so rightly excoriate below . . .

Tsk. None of that negative attitood here, young lady. I have a loaf

sourdough in my oven EAWS. Even if you don't want to go through the
minor schlep of getting your own levain started from scratch, the
sourdough bread types are always giving away their surplus starter.
Look out for Earth-mother types in sandals, with unshaven legs. If
you
were closer, you could have some of mine.

I guess I'll just settle for thanking you for the kind offer of those
Earth-mother types in sandals with unshaven legs -- but it sounds like
rather more of a commitment than I'm ready to make at the moment.

I also think I probably prefer the father-type in boots with unshaven
legs - and the fact that you called my 'young lady' (yes, so easily
susceptible) -- but this is all getting so personal so suddenly . . .
(blushes, retires whilst fanning self)

Frances Kemmish had it:

Quote:
I remember hearing Miriam Stoppard interviewed once. She talked about
being taken to a Chinese restaurant, and eating fried rice. She asked
the young man she was with what the tasty little pink things were, and,
when he said "shrimp", she ran outside and vomited in the gutter.

I must assume from this that Miriam Stoppard is Jewish. I didn't
know that, not that it's of any importance.

This seems to happen a lot. I didn't know that Michael Howard was
Jewish until somebody mentioned it when he was elected Tory leader.

I wouldn't have known she was Jewish if I hadn't heard this interview.
Her maiden name was Moore-Robinson, which wouldn't have given any clues
either.

I found David's use of apparently-non-countable "Tootsie
Roll" jarring.

Really? How would you say "A large bag of Tootsie Roll"?
Rolls?

"A large bag of tootsie rolls". Each individual wrapped thing
is "a
tootsie roll".

Tootsie Roll

Oy!

I reject this Oy. What is the substance of which Tootsie Rolls are
made? Is it just "Tootsie"?
....

It doesn't have a name. If I had to mention it, I might say "Tootsie
Roll stuff" or "that chocolate-flavored caramel stuff that Tootsie
Rolls are made of".

to
follow "Pop-Tarts" or the trademark of a competitor product on
the

I certainly wouldn't come up with "toaster pastries". For one
thing, a
lot of people don't have toasters anymore (= BizarroTCE "these
days").
For two thing, they're not "pastries" by any legitimate definition.

Really? Is this similar to the electric kettle discussion? How do
they make toast, since grills (=US broilers) are not popular over
there.

Toast is okay, but it's seldom better than bread, and it's a lot more
trouble to make (since I buy bread).

I do occasionally have grilled cheese for lunch. You have to toast the
bread, which I do under the broiler.

WTF can "trainer chopsticks" possibly be?

One has a bowl at the end, and the other has tines. Your fortune
is written down the side of each.

It's nice to have a few days away, but my goodness it's lovely to be

I have been in Edinburgh for 24 hours, where I breakfasted on
toast and Weetabix.

No fry-up?

Holiday Inn Express, Leith - "continental breakfast" included.
They don't do "cooked".

We stayed in a lovely hotel in Bath (The Francis) this weekend.
YoungBloke had a lovely time smiling at people each breakfast and was
happy with Weetabix and toast. I had a fried breakfast one morning,
and a more continental, healthy breakfast the other two - fruit,
cheese, salami and juice.

I'm not sure the fruit muffins counted as healthy but they were very
tasty.

I've just seen a site that explains all you need to know about kosher. I recommend those interested in what is kosher to have a look at it.

www.koshercertification.org.uk

Best of luck
