All of this breakfast discussion reminds me that we vaguely
discussed a May Day boink in Oxford. This could mean a very early
start to hear the singers on Magdalen Tower at dawn, followed by
breakfast. Or a more conventional lunch time meeting.

Comments?

I'm up for either of those.

I reckon that over 22,000 dawns have passed me by without my having
risen for them, and I don't plan to break this habit of a lifetime
yet. But I could well debunk and shift myself 16 miles by
lunchtime,
seeing as it's a Saturday, especially if a pub and good-hearted
AUEers are involved. My ideal would be an 11.30 rendezvous at
Bardwell Road punt station, and no falling in before the return
trip...

I want the whole pagan dawn thing again. Perhaps this means we should
start the night before?

You don't want to get the cops involved. Pagan Dawn will almost
certainly be accompanied by her brother 'Pagan' Morse.

Why are the supermarket display areas so full of grape juice this
time of year? Every store seems to have a display area of kosher
items that contains several different types of grape juice.

Simple answer? Because it's Easter and therefore Passover, and so
the supermarkets have displays of Pesach stuff (wine, grape juice,
horseradish[1], matzoh, macaroons, matzoh ball soup mix, gefilte
fish, etc.) for their Jewish customers.

Wait, Erk, what do you mean by "Because it's Easter and therefore
Passover", in English usage?

"Easter is coming up, and everybody knows that Passover comes at about
the same time, so if our Christian customers will be buying food for
Easter dinner, our Jewish customers will be buying food for Passover."
Some years the displays don't come out until after Passover, some
years they come out a month too early.

I thought of this when I was in New York this weekend. We had Zabars'
flyer with their Passover/Easter menu. They do sell hams for Easter.

Just to follow up my previous queries about sourdough -- I went round
my neighbourhood establishments trying out the suggested French and
Dutch names for the stuff the other day. They knew perfectly well what
I wanted -- but they don't make. Never. Sorry, madame, no.

They do have a marvellous range of breads whose cereals are numbered --
'6 grain', '8 grain' and so on -- but I've never mustered the nerve to
ask which grains are which.

And I guess I'm not going to get my sourdough after all.

But thanks for helping me try,

cheers,
Stephanie in Brussels

You could still bake your own: here's a random example from the many
instructive websites.

I yust looked u my "Country Breads" book and the nearest I can turn up
are Bock and Oberweis, both in Luxembourg. Maybe you'd like to pop over
there one Saturday?

Tsk. None of that negative attitood here, young lady. I have a loaf of
sourdough in my oven EAWS. Even if you don't want to go through the
minor schlep of getting your own levain started from scratch, the
sourdough bread types are always giving away their surplus starter.
Look out for Earth-mother types in sandals, with unshaven legs. If you
were closer, you could have some of mine.

Is there a holiday that calls for grilled shrimp?

I don't think they really mind what holiday you celelbrate so long as
you buy from them. I was interested, reading their potted history, that
they make so much of their pricing. I find them fiendishly expensive.

If you believe popular conception, then any Australian holiday calls
for shrimp on the barbie.

No, but you can be pretty sure that it won't be on the menu at very
many seders, shrimp being "overtly" non-kosher any time of the year.

Unless it's "shrimp fried rice" from the Chinese takeout place...there seems to
exist in the minds of a lot of semi-nonobservant Jews a special dispensation to
cover Chinese takeout....r

I know that, and I think the people who own Zabars know it too.

Surely not for Passover, unless you are Reformed. "Kosher" is tougher than

"halal".

Except that Australians eat prawns, not shrimp. That Paul Hogan commercial

was strictly for American consumption.

I remember hearing Miriam Stoppard interviewed once. She talked about
being taken to a Chinese restaurant, and eating fried rice. She asked
the young man she was with what the tasty little pink things were, and,
when he said "shrimp", she ran outside and vomited in the gutter.
