Hi.

I f***ed around, now my school's deadline is Tuesday, March 15. My W2
from my summer job is at home, Mom's sending it overnight in the
morning. I have the W2s from my work study, and the statements from my
banks.

Is there some other documentation I need, like showing my financial aid
from this year? I am not too concerned right now about getting lots of
money back, as long as I can get the thing filed in time.

Also, maybe this is the wrong place to ask, but are there places that
will do your taxes in one day?

What I'm thinking is, if it isn't too complicated (I'm pretty smart) I
will figure it out on my own, even if I have to just figure out the
FAFSA parts and file my return later. If it is really complicated, I'm
better off paying someone....

I'm having a hard time finding stuff about this online. What can yall
tell me, besides don't wait so long?

I strongly advise AGAINST paying someone to help you with your FAFSA.
The form is not that complicated and if you run into difficulty, almost
every financial aid administrator will help you. In fact, federal
regulations require colleges and universities to provide counseling
services. What aid administrators don't like, however, is an
unprepared student who walks in having done nothing (not even tried to
complete the form) with no paperwork expecting the aid officer to do it
for them. So try it and then get help.

It is much easier to do your tax return first before you complete the
FAFSA so I would do that ASAP. It also reduces your risk of being
selected for a process called verification where the school determines
whether you answers on the FAFSA are accurate.

It's more important that you meet the school's deadline than that you be
exact - you can always revise the FAFSA later after taxes are done, but
you want your original FAFSA logged as received by the due date. To meet
your deadline you'll need to do the FAFSA online with best estimates at
www.fafsa.ed.gov

Since you only talk about your income, and not mom's, I'll assume that
you are an independent student. If you are an independent student who
doesn't need to report parent information, all you need is to know how
much you earned from work (including work study), plus interest etc.
Other financial aid is not a factor.

Assuming you are not married and not being taken as an exemption on
mom's taxes, deduct from your taxable income the standard deduction of
$4,850 + $3,100 personal exemption and your tax is 10% of the first
$7,150 remainder, plus 15% of any excess.

If in fact you have to provide parent information, or are an exemption
on mom's taxes, it get's more involved.

I actually meant paying someone to do my taxes. I can fill out the
FAFSA.
I decided, looking over the FAFSA, there was no way I could figure out
all the necessary amounts without having the taxes actually done. So,
this afternoon, I'm having my taxes done.

Yes, I'm independent. I'm going tonight to have my taxes done, I'll
look for what you're saying on there.
I checked all over that IRS site last night (before posting my
question, like a good student) but couldn't find forms anywhere.
