The story takes place in Africa.

In a Spanish colony or territory, perhaps? Some online dictionary says it
means 'scram' and 'bushy tail' in Spanish, either of which might make
sense if the intent is that the narrator & co. left town.

[From an Afr. language.]
A trap for game consisting of two converging hedges in the form of the
letter V, with a pit at the angle, into which the game is driven.
