Obviously.

This reminds me of a sentence I heard on /Ripley's Believe It or
Not/ while channel surfing. I'm quoting it from memory now, but I
think I've got the gist:

"After passing away in 1920, people came from all over the world to
visit her."

They nmust have. It says something altogether different now.

"Miners Refuse to Work after Death "

From part 3 or 4 of the recent PBS series "Broadway: The American
Musical", which I've finally found time to watch, in talking about
George Gershwin:

"Born in Brooklyn in 1898, his parents were Russian immigrants who
constantly moved about the city."

Can one not be an immigrant prepartum?

No. If his parents had in fact been born in Brooklyn in 1898 (or any
other year) they would be natural-born citizens, not immigrants.

I like headlines for a different reason. The evening newspaper here in Leeds
is the Yorkshire Evening Post, whose inside pages are devoted to local
stories. These pages are the place to look for good headlines. Indeed, the
weaker the actual story, the better will be the headlines. Here is an
example.

Story content: - about a 40-year old mother of three who has won the local
heats of the National Breadmaking Championship, and is going on to compete
in the finals in London. The prize for the eventual National Champion is a
small family car, and a year's supply of flour.

Introductory headline - Upper-crust Ruth through to bread-making final.

Main headline - Mum's a star in the yeast

First line of the report - A Yorkshire mother is hoping to rise above the
opposition in the final of a national bread-making contest.

You might mock the weak puns, but this sort of headline is actually very
difficult to write. If you don't believe me, try doing it yourself as
follows.
Ask your wife or husband to summarise the content of a previously unseen but
similar story from your own local newspaper, without telling you the
headlines written by the professional journalist. Then try to devise your
own introductory headline, main headline, and the first line of the story,
each involving a pun. More difficult than at first sight it appears, I can
guarantee.

A new headline on the BBC news website:

"Many insurgents on the streets of Ramadi. More soon."

Unless they then moved to Russia, settled there and became
citizens, and then later emigrated to the U.S. Then they
would be immigrants, born in Brooklyn, and ready to begin
moving constantly about the city.
