Post subject: What should I major in? |
|
|
Hi all, I need some advice. What should I major in if I wanted to
become a political speechwriter? I'm majoring in Political Science
right now with a minor in writing, and I'm almost done, but before I go
to law school I really want to make sure I've exhausted my
undergraduate options. Ultimately I want to become a speechwriter;
what would be the best major to accomplish this goal?
Also, what specifically should I be looking for in terms of
speechwriting and what I'll find in my classes?
Thanks,

i love giving anonymous advice to people on the net. honestly, imo, if
you want to excel at speechwriting, you should take some liberal arts.
you should major or maybe minor in philosophy. actually, i would
rather take bizzare eclectic classes from great dedicated passionate
professors than solid desirable content wise classes from those who
can't get themselves or you interested in the subject matter, or in
learning generally. you should talk to your professors. but it's great
you are thinking about this.
as far as education, there is the majors you should take, which i
think politics and philosophy and english and writing will help. but
there are also learnings and forms of education with which all the
university education systems will never be able to provide. i learned
a lot doing an nlp seminar, which you should take, from a
professional, like richard bandler. it is great to study general
semantics. i may be getting too deep now for what you want. oh yeah, a
couple psychology and sociology classes will be useful. you should
definitely read machiavelli if you want to be in politics. stuff like
the literature of joyce and shakespeare, (oh yeah also take an acting
class. i'm sure that would help, i never did, but i did almost
everything else i'm telling you) read joyce and shakespeare. an
english major would probably be good.
but do the major to learn, and to go on to your masters. but really,
the major won't matter to your employers or your politician man once
you get out. it won't matter much. what will matter is your
enthusiasm, charisma, dedication and skill and all that. i wish you
well, young one. parting words, don't trust me, trust you. but my
advice is Literature- read it. but in order to keep your body active
and mind-body together, you must also do athletics. but you must also
read shakespeare. check out napoleon hill's think and grow rich. or go
to naphill.org. here are some possibly useful suggestions. and make
college fun. just have a fucking great time in college and make
friends with a lot of beautiful women. life is short. live it hard
core soft core. it don't matter, just live it.
