Actually, the Hamiltons were already installed in the Ambassador's
residence in Naples when Nelson first met them. The shipboard episode
was a cruise to Malta in 1800.

I know. And I didn't know about the shipboard episode at all.
What happened: did Hamilton require passage,
or did Nelson invite them as his guests?

Nelson invited them as guests. He claimed that he had to visit the fleet
blockading Malta but it was really just a pleasure cruise.

The Hamiltons returned to England

take a packet boat for the last stage from Germany to Yarmouth.
And Sir William wasn't Ambassador to Italy, he was Ambassador to Naples.

That's why I wrote 'in Italy'.

He was actually an Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary. I'm
not sure that Ambassador was a formal title at that time. (Or even now?)

Slapper? Whopper? Belter?

Sure you did. You knew about the Kingdom of Naples but you didn't want

to mention it. Like the Pope lives in Italy.
