This is a misconception. Orientals

Oy!

Ornamentals.

Luxembourg's history dates back to the tenth century A.D.,
when Count Siegfried acquired from the Abbey of St. Maximin
of Trier a small, rocky promontory called the Bock, where
there stood a small castle called Lucilinburhuc (Little Burg).

After looking at this URL, I wonder why 10 months isn't used
universally.

That's the same page I quoted in my other post. I don't see why you make
your comment, though, unless it's that you think a month is four weeks.
A calendar month is 4.3 weeks.

You discovered my dirty little secret, Donna. I don't read every post,
not even in the threads I "follow." You're right about the math, though.
I got ensnared by the number 40.

I just chalk it up to another mystery of the Orient.

When a Caucasian asks a Japanese person, who has been living in this
country for 10 years, how long a woman is pregnant and gets the answer
"10 months," something is wrong. Of course, she is answering in OUR
months, not the old lunar month calendar that her own country hasn't
been using since 1973. Could it be that many Japanese are actually
thrown off by an old saying that was created long ago? At least one of
the Japanese girls I spoke to seriously thought it was 10 western
months. Only one of the three actually knew it was 9 months, but once
believed it was 10 months.

It's not only the Japanese. I've seen books and articles in German and
in French detailing the ten months of pregnancy, using a convention
that a month is 4 weeks, not a Gregorian calendar month. Maybe those
of us who don't think that way are the odd ones out.

cheers,

You seem to think that nine months is scientific fact and that ten
months is wrong. It isn't that simple. Did you see Donna's post
upthread, or follow the URL in the post you followed up to?

Sorry for the typo. The Japanese have been using the western calendar
since 1873, not 1973.

But "ten months" is not what the average German would answer you; it
needs explanation.

Googlefight:

"Schwangerschaft dauert zehn Monate" - 2
"Schwangerschaft dauert neun Monate" - 35
"Die Schwangerschaft einer Betazoidin dauert zehn Monate." - 1 Wink

A period of ten luna months is approximately equal to nine calendar months.
I think this is just a difference in cultural usage. In my cohort we refer
to pregnancy in terms of number of weeks of gestation with the first two
weeks as the time when one was pregnant in hindsight only.

That's true. I have two small notebooks called something like
"Mother-Baby Health Notebook", which is given to a woman who is
pregnant. According to them, my first child was born after 38 weeks
and two days of pregnancy, and my second child was born after 40 weeks
and 5 days. Hospital people don't use "pregnancy month" any more,
but the notebooks refer to the pregnancy month and explain how to
count pregnancy months:

the first month of pregnancy -- 0 week
1st week
2nd week
4th week
the second month of pregnancy -- 5th week
6th week
7th week
8th week
. .
. .
. .
the tenth month of pregnancy -- 36th week
37th week
38th week
39th week

I think such a "a month = four weeks" counting style is
only used for pregnancy month.

To tell the truth, until 22, I had actually believed that a woman
is pregnant for 10 "western" months, because of the old fixed phrase,
"totsuki tooka" (ten months and ten days). I didn't know at that time
that pregnancy months are counted as "four weeks = one month".

Not anymore in Japan, except few occasions. I think people in their
seventies or eighties today are the last generation who were brought
up with the old counting-age system.

Thanks. You have confirmed what I've been trying to say. Though it is
caused by the difference between two calendar systems, there are many
Japanese people who seriously believe a pregnancy lasts for 10 western
months. Field research over banging heads any day.

The Japanese girl that I spoke to certainly didn't assume that
Americans automatically switch to a four-week-month calendar when
speaking about pregnancy.

I can't seem to avoid the pun, but yes, it seems that quite a few
Japanese girls have a misconception about pregnancy duration.

Yes, but that misconception makes the issue moot.
