If you're watching "Celebrity Poker Showdown" at the moment (AIYHNBTD)
you'll just have heard the host call one of the players a "comedienne and
monologist". Yes, that's right, a mon-ol-o-gist, a monnol-ajist. I was
shocked at first, but it does sound neater than with a hard g, and it's in
AHD4 (soft g in dialogist, too). The word "monology" exists, just about, so
I suppose I should find this pronunciation less surprising. The problem with
this pronunciation, AISI, is that for someone who hardly knows the word
"monolog(ue)" anyway, it will be hard to make the connection. They're
probably more likely to think the person is a surgeon.

Usually the form "xologist" is derived from "xology," with soft g's in both
cases. I suppose that's why people naturally use the soft g in the case of
"monologist", even though the noun is of a different form. "Monologuist"
looks odd to me, anyway.
If somebody makes their living writing catalogs, would they be called a
catalogist? How about if they write catalogues? |

Cataloger or cataloguer. Not one who writes mail-order catalogs, but one
who catalogs items in a museum.

"Those"? Surely you can only have one at a time?

You can have as many monoids as you like, but I don't know why you'd want
to, they're not very interesting. I speak as a semigroup man from way back. |
