I'm middle aged and have been in the work force for many years. I
never completed my bachelor's degree, but have about 90 semester hours
towards it. The main reasons for this (other than procrastination)
were lack of time and money. Meanwhile, I've worked the last 15-20
years in offices, mostly as a secretary or administrative assistant.

Due to upcoming changes in my life conditions, I may be able to go back
to college and finish. I'm considering a career connected to my major
(English), in the fields of non-fiction writing, research,
instructional design, public information or teaching (obviously, I'm
still not clear on "what I want to do").

I find myself asking the same old question - how useful is a college
degree in this day and age? There seem to be plenty of lesser degree
programs out there (e.g., certificate programs). Why should I spend
time and money (my own this time, not my parents') getting a degree?
Interested in hearing all points of view.

Thanks, Rich

A degree is something that everyone understands and trusts. A
certificate can come from a diploma mill. THat is why the school should
be accredited.

A certificate shows that you've had vocational training, whereas a B.A.
shows that you've had an _education_. I'd rather have a person with a
well-rounded education working for than someone who has been trained like a
circus animal or a dog. Also, having a degree makes you a far more
interesting person, in my opinion.

To further this, a degree teaches a person not just the theories but also
molds the person into a way of thinking and to a certain depth of thinking.
As you progress towards your degree, you get trained into a habit of
thinking deeper and questioning more than just accepting things at face
value.

I would combine the vocational training with a degree if possible.
