I'm only studying part-time and working part-time, but I'm still going
quietly insane at everything I have to do to keep up -- partly because
I took time off after my first degree and have got out of practice
studying, and partly because it's an awfully hard course. :-)

I'm trying to take it one day at a time, too, and one step at a time:
just say to myself, "Okay, I'm going to sit down and make notes on one
article now, that's all."

I've recently set up a weblog to keep reminding myself to do one more
small thing like that. Just little reminders, quotes, news stories,
occasional mini-essays about study techniques I've tried. I'm hoping
it'll be useful to others in the same boat too, as I keep developing
it.

I was just reading your postings and wondering if any of you had any
hints on what kind of jobs would be good for a full time student. It's
hard to find a place to work where you can take off random days if you
have a test or assignment that week. Plus a place that will be willing
to give time off for long breaks like Christmas in order for me to go
home. I need a job this semester and don't want my schooling to have
to suffer for it.
HELP!

Hmm. You could try tutoring -- high school exams will mostly come at

different times than uni exams -- but it's pretty irregular work.

You could check if anyone in your department needs a research assistant
-- though this sort of work usually goes to post-grads or at least
second or third year students.

I'd expect most customer service type places to be fairly flexible in
shift-switching between workers. But they will often have systems in
place where you need to inform your supervisor, otherwise people switch
so many shifts that they lose track of who's working on a particular
shift.

I'd check at the student services centre to see if there's any
job-search system set up to help students. In New Zealand, the Student
Job Search service is set up in most student associations to help
students find temporary or permanent jobs. The university itself often
has a career's advisory service.
Hope this helps,

Thanks so much. I'll have to look into some of those. Maybe I should
just tell them that I'm a student and they should expect me to need
time off.
Thanks again

It's probably best to be honest up front. (You _can_ always lie: say
"Yes, I can keep working through this time," and then quit. But then
you won't be able to work there again, you won't get a reference, and
other students will have a harder time getting work there too. So, not
really recommended...)

What's best is if you can offer to work different times, instead of
taking the time off completely -- like if you've got an exam the day
after you should be working, offer to work the night after the exam
instead of the night before. The more flexible you can be, the more
flexible they can be.

This doesn't work for Christmas holidays, unfortunately. And most
retail places are extra-busy over Christmas, so need more staff, not
less. So something related to a school term would be ideal. You could
try applying to your library -- for desk work or shelving, etc.
They're probably already fully staffed for this semester or even the
full year, but someone may quit.
Good luck!

Well did you read about the school completely before YOU applied? I'm with
another online school and I'm learning a shit load. So don't dis online
schools. I think you need to take your own advise when you said.
" insist that they provide the names and numbers of graduates in your area
and speak with some people about their experiences"
