Post subject: Books are costing WAY too much! |
|
|
If you feel that college bookstore prices for textbooks is
ridiculous... read on. Across the US, textbooks on average cost $100
per book! And then they buy the book back used for a measley $9.00,
then resell it for 3x's that! I have some suggestions for
students/parents looking to save money:
1. Go to the college bookstore at least 2 weeks before class with pen
and paper in hand
2. Write down the author, text title, ISBN, edition #, and the cost
of the used and new price
3. Leave that bookstore and get to a computer.
4. Go to other resources to find the best price on each textbook.
Some of my favorites are: textbookhound.com half.com and amazon.com
5. Take the money you saved on textbooks (I save on average 50% a
year!) and go get yourself a massage! You deserve it!
(another way to save money is as soon as you know you are taking that
class, find a student taking that class and offer to buy their book at
the end for $5 more than the buyback price, exchange #'s, follow up,
and save $! Who knows, I even had one student who took one of my
classes I had so at the end of the semester we simply traded books
even up!)
GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for those pretty helpful tips! Books are getting to become
ridiculously expensive. For my senior level accounting books I racked
up a $600 bill for three classes. I wish I could have been a little
more savvy in thinking up ways to get around the system! Good thing
graduation is in May!!!!
Good luck! |

Excellent point. I just ordered a book for my graduate class and found a new
copy online cheaper than I could buy or order a used copy from many of the
sellers.

One ray of hope if you are a literature major...
If you are a literature major, odds are very high that you can print
out any literary work ever written and not buy the book at all. Just
make a notebook of authors. Bartleby.com and project guttenburg are
the best sites for that! Any other subject, I do not know what to tell
you, except for philosophy, the Stanford Internet Encyclopedia of
Philosophy has everything and even has links to just the motherload of
works of philosophers like Plotinus, ex cetera...
peace,
merlinjones
please note I am referring to real works in their entirety and not
cliff notes shite. And, I am sorry for being a bad typest.
