Post subject: EFC: split or per student? |
|
|
I've read conflicting info on this, so just asking again:
Our FAFSA EFC is about $15K. We have 2 children going to college (next
year we'll have 3, yikes!)
So is the $15k going to be viewed by the colleges as per student, or
split between them ($7.5k each)?

Assuming that you marked on each FAFSA that there would be two in
college, it's $15K per student.
The process has determined that you should be able to pay at least 30K
toward college for all students combined, then divided it among the two
students.
If each student has a 15K EFC, it means that if you had only one student
the EFC would have been about $30K. But since each student marked that
there would be two students, it came back as 15K on each. If you had 3
students, it would have been about 10K per student.
If the students are worth it and the colleges choose to fill most of
each students aid eligibility, it can work out that you pay the same
total of $30,000 whether you have one student, two students, or 3
students. But then, nothing ever works perfectly...

I did my son's FAFSA, my daughter is going to do her's. His SAR report
shows 2 on line 66 (Number in College 2004-2005), but then is blank on
line 85. I know line 66 is the parent's info, but I'm assuming 85 is
the student's info?
Thanks for your help here, Steve. This college process is mind
boggling.

Question 85 (and 84) is only for independent students so should be left
blank for a dependent student like yours.
