Post subject: Ways to get federal aid. |
|
|
Hello, I've applied for FAFSA and numerous grants and loans, and I keep
getting denied for some reason. Is there anything I can do to get federal
aid. I do not make enough on my own to afford school and I can't depend on
my parents for they are on a fixed income.

What do you mean you keep getting denied? At a minimum, you should be
offered an unsubsidized Stafford loan.

Our daughter is 21, still lives at home. |
I have read from other posts (Much thanks Steve! ) the "custodial"
step parent for the past 12 months has to list their income but..
if we (her stepdad(me) and mother) do not claim her as a dependant
will the make her eligible for financial aid, other than the
Unsubsidized Stafford loan?
Per her school financial aid office,
she has to be either:
* 24
* married
* single with a child
if not she has to claim our income.
thx

Any of the above make her an independent student and parent info would
not be required on the FAFSA. Same thing if she is a graduate student, a
veteran, provides more than 50% of someone else's support, is an orphan,
or was a ward of the court until 18.
Otherwise she is a dependent student for financial aid purposes and has
to include parent income. Whether or not you claim her as a tax
dependent has no bearing on financial aid. (It did matter at one time,
but that law was changed even before I began my business over ten years
ago.)
