I have a Freshman at Yale and a senior in high school who will be going to
Harvard in the fall. My question is how do I anticipate what Yale will give
in aid and factor that into the Harvard aid application. Conceivably, I
could assume I may get nothing from Yale this next year therefore count
$40,000.00 as an expense on the Harvard app. I hope I have made my question
clear enough.
Thanks for any advice.

Are you saying that the Harvard application asks how much aid you expect
from Yale next year? If so, where does this question appear? I can't
find it online in any of their forms. If such a question is asked, then
all you can do is answer with what you received for the first year at Yale.

Thanks for the response. I am wanting to include the Yale tuition as an
expected expense. Just don't know how much to include. My husbands income
fluctuates (he's a military reservist and was activated that year which made
our income bleak) but his year will likely be better income wise.
I will check with husband to verify my acuracy and clear up any confusion if
there is any.
PS There was no place on the application that specifically asks for
expected aid from Yale.
Thanks.

Harvard will already be factoring in the Yale cost - on the FAFSA and
Profile you tell them that there will be two students in college, and
the Profile asks how much you paid toward Yale this year.

In case you don't already know it, both students should be eligible for
more financial aid next year because there will be two in college.

The Expected Family Contribution portion computed from the parents
income/assets will be split between the students. That will make each
eligible for more aid than just the single student was this year.

As a rough guide look at the 2003-2004 Student Aid Report (yellow
paper), and find the EFC under the date on the front page. Assuming that
the student didn't have much income or assets, if there had been two
students that year the EFC would have been about 1/2 on each student.

Cool! Looking for every angle possible to reduce this potentialy large
debt. Especially since hubby's income varies.
Thanks so much for the help.
