Post subject: Do you have to wait for W2's to complete FAFSA? |
|
|
Our W2's won't be here for another few weeks and I would really like
to go ahead and submit my FAFSA. Can I use the information from our
last pay stubs instead of waiting for the W2 to arrive?
Thanks,
Kim

I'm sure no expert -
but from what I understand it's better to estimate ( from previous year tax
return if it's somewhat similiar, or in your case - year end pay stubs ) and
then correct later based on actual amounts, in order to meet early
deadlines - than wait for accurate information initially.

It is more important that you submit the FAFSA by the earliest deadline
of all your schools than it is to be 100% accurate. For many schools,
missing the deadline by even one day means those on time get first shot
at the available money, and those who are late have to wait and see if
there's anything left.
You can always make corrections. So if waiting for the final official
figures and completing your taxes would mean missing the deadline, go
with final paystubs and best guesses on the other income info.

Thanks for the replies Steve and Devon! My school requires that it
the FAFSA be submitted no latter than the last day of February. I
will have my W2s by then. I wasn't sure if it would be better for me
to go ahead and file with my paystubs or wait for the W2s since they
will be here before the deadline. I am wondering if the earlier you
get it in the better your chances are at getting enough student aid?
Also, how difficult is the corrections process? Will it slow down the
processing of the financial aid?
Thanks again,
Kim

As long as you meet the deadline you should be okay, but I like to file
as early as possible in case something goes wrong.

It shouldn't make any difference, but...

If you've done the original FAFSA online, the correction process is
quick and easy.
