I would like to attend a 4 year college in the fall. Trouble is that
my parents are in some serious financial trouble. My question is:
Becasue their financies are screwed up does that mean that I'll get
more in aid or will they just look at earnings from the FAFSA form?
Also, for student loans, you must have a co-signer right? I only ask
becasue a friend of mine didn't have to. Thanks!

The FAFSA establishes the eligibility for aid using 2003 income. If the
parent income in 2003 was low, it will increase your aid eligibility. If
you mean that 2003 income is much higher than anticipated for 2004 then
you should write a letter direct to the college director of financial
aid and explain your unusual circumstances. They may be willing to make
adjustments.

The federal Stafford Loans and the Perkins Loans are in the student's
name only, no co-signer required.

That's good to know about the loans. My parents income is aobut the
same, it's just that they had to many bills and had to file
bankruptcy. Is that something that I should discuss with the Financial
Aid people?

John,

PLUS is Parent Loan for Undergraduate Student. The parents may brrow up
to the full amount needed to pay for college after any financial aid.
However, parents must have a clean credit history and it doesn't sound
like yours do. In that case, the parent applies for the PLUS, get's
turned down, and you are automatically eligible for another $4,000 in
student loans of your own.

John, your questions indicate that there may be a lot of other aspects
to financial aid that you don't even know to ask about. I'd suggest that
you visit www.finaid.org which has more about financial aid than you
ever knew existed.
