I see this morning that Google Groups has made some style changes
to
its
Usenet archives. People might want to try it out, hunting for some
old
posts or whatever, and see if these are improvements or not.
(I find that the "original" page, where the Message ID is found,
displays in too small of type -- I just sent them a note.)
You mean Google Groups Beta, right? I don't see any difference in
the
original (and I'm *not* an early adapter).
Well, I'm not quite sure what happened today, but somehow I wound up
*in* the Beta, which I never had before. I assumed it was their
change,
but maybe I just used some other route instead of my trusty bookmark
and
wound up there. Google - Groups - Advanced Group Search sends you to
the
Beta.
Not me, as of 1600 hours CST I still get the original when I click
Groups on
the Google home page. It sounds like they're phasing it in gradually,
which
seems odd.
Oh, crumb, now *I* don't get there either. I don't think I'm going
nuts... My best guess is that after one day's trial (maybe by giving it
to the outside-of-US market?) Google has pulled the Beta forms back off
again, to make revisions.
Now what I see on Google - Groups is the line:
New! Preview the next version of Google Groups
|
That's what I see too. |

Yes, the beta was "on air" for half a day, or something like that. It
was only visible through the google.com domain, though, not through
the national Google domains (.uk, .fi, .de etc.)
While it was there, there was no "search by date" facility in the
"Advanced Search" form, and direct "selm" or "threadm" linking to
messages by their message-id did not work, so all direct links I
have to various articles were broken.
Slashdot also ran a story about it:

I certainly hope they keep it off the air for good. I prepared a
message yesterday in response to Donna's first posting saying why I
didn't like it (principally because it has no simple way of searching
postings by author, and the complicated way ("Advanced Search")
doesn't work: it told me that there were no postings in aue by Donna
Richoux, for example). Then I found that the preview button did
nothing. So I read carefully what I had written and pressed "Post",
and found that that didn't work either. So I thought "I wonder if the
Cancel button" works, only to find that it works just fine on an
unsaved message. At that point I decided that maybe my participation
in Google groups was at an end.

One whose URL ends in "output=gplain"? It's not formatted at all; just
change your default font to something bigger, or everything that's not
formatted will look too small.
No, sorry, that doesn't work. In Internet Explorer 5.l I have only one
Preference control over font size, and the particular pages in question
definitely are set to go smaller than that size. I can use the Plus key
(twice) to enlarge the screen, but that is slow.
Just to be clearer what I'm talking about. Suppose I use the Advanced
Search to call up a list of my own posts. I click on the first. Near the
top I now get:
new format at Google archive
Only 1 message in topic
Donna Richoux Dec 2, 1:38 am show options
I click on "show options". I get another, similar version of the post
that is headed

I click on "Show Original" (because I want to know the Message ID, and
I've not yet found any other way to get it). The screen it gives me now
is the one I'm saying is too small to read. Somewhere in there is the
Message ID for that post. So I use the Plus key on my toolbar to enlarge
it enough to read.

Don't know about your browser but on K-meleon
hitting Control + or - will alter the screen size. |

I don't see that in any obvious place. What's the URL that you get?

Things are changing. The "only l message" has rather naturally grown to
"22 messages." And they've added a thing about "view as tree" so they're
attempting to put back the left-hand diagram.
The URL for this same form of the post is:

I can also say that the Google staff has exchanged several messages with
me over the small-font question, so they really are working on this.

Ah, I was somewhere else altogether, I think.
The culprit is obviously this:
body, td {
font-family: arial, sans-serif;
font-size: 83%;
}
In Mozilla the text is smallish, but perfectly readable; I wonder if the
problem is that your Explorer is applying the 83% twice, once on anything
contained in the body, then once more on anything contained in a TD,
yielding 0.83 x 0.83 = 0.69, which is quite small indeed.
They really should not mess with font size for the main body text.

As of the time of the original post, the "new" version
could not list results by date. that seems to be fixed
but the old Advanced Search page option pulldown does
not work. One has to click on a link once you get the
search results.

there's an extremely annoying number of [watched-n.gif], etc.
in the lynx version results now. ugly, ugly, ugly.
also in some results, posters' addresses are truncated,
joedoe@foo.... not joedoe@foobar.net
and when one displays a thread in "tree" format the links
to individual posts do not work. one gets the 1st post in
that batch of 10.
the main defect of the old version is that one couldn't
follow long archived threads (couldn't get to the middle
posts) at least that's the main defect I noticed.
now, when I compare results with stuff I've saved or
what's current there's loads of posts simply missing.
I've sent some results to groups-support@google.com
that's the address they gave me when I first complained.
they asked for screen shots. wonder if the recipients
know what lynx is. |
