People say "Jesus" or "Jesus Christ" when they are in bad situation. By the
way, the word means god ( the great ). Why do people say that at that
time??

Why people use the names of gods when making exclamations, I'll leave to
others. It is common enough a practice across many religions and many
cultures to suggest that it has been well-studied.
Actually, I know some of the claimed answers, but I am rather going to
address another point.
"Jesus Christ" does not mean anything like "god (the great)." Some
people may believe that it is an appellation of their god, but "Jesus"
is nothing more than a given name. It is a Latin (Iesus) and Greek
(Iesous) form of a very common Jewish name (Yeshua').
Nor does "Christ" have nay unambiguous meaning. It is a Latin
(Christus) and Greek (Khristos) translation of a Hebrew (Mashiah) word
meaning "anointed." In the Jewish scriptures, apart from the possible
exception of Danial 9:25-26, it does *not* refer to an eschatological
king, the use to which it is put in the New Testament.
"Messiah" is used for prophets, priests, and kings who have been
anointed. It is even applied to the foreign king Cyrus in Isaiah 45:1. |
