Can you buy a firkin's worth of anything nowadays?
Other musings ...
Tatterdemalion ragamuffins belong to the lumpenproletariat.
A cosh is like a blackjack (can't find a picture of one in Google). I
had previously been acquainted with sin and tan.
To poll is to trim the horns of the electorate.

I'm fairly certain that some cask ales are still supplied to pubs in
what is *called* a firkin -- but I don't know if it actually is a
firkin, or whether it's a metric equivalent or something.

A firkin is a volumetric capacity, not a price.

You can easily buy a pin, or demi-firkin, for your party. Most likely
to be a tapped plastic bag in a cardboard box (a "polypin") these
days, of course; but the real things are still around.

In one of the offices I worked in it was traditional to get a little
firkin in for Christmas ...

Anything you can buy 9 gallons (US) of, you can buy a firkin of.
For other values of 'firkin':
You can buy 1/2 barrel of beer, or a firkin of beer.
You can buy 1/3 tun of wine, or a firkin of wine. |

Heard on the radio recently: A dog is for life, not just for Christmas,
so be careful at the office party.
(I didn't laugh, of course. Just passing it on.)
