I would like to know what the meaning of "screening" is in the
context of resumes as in "resume screening"?

Resume screening what? People waiting in line to board an airplane? In that
case it would mean searching them and checking them out . In the case of a
movie it would mean to start showing it again. More context would be nice. |

When resumés are sent to an office someone examines them to see that they
are acceptable. If they are then they are sent to the personnel department
which may take further action.

The first use of a resume is to disqualify the applicant. Those
surviving that process move on to consideration of their positive
attributes.

I hear in some fields, they use a computer to screen them first, at
least the ones sent by email. Some places get so many, they set the
computer to look for certain key words. I guess the ones that have
them get sent to that person you mention, or straight to personnel.
