Are the US and British OED CD-ROMs identical? I ask because it seems
I might save forty quid if I order it from the US instead of just
popping into Blackwell's like a gentleman.

Have you taken the cost of shipping into account?...(remembering a parcel I sent
to Oxford that took forty times its purchase price to post; hi Jacqui!)...r |

I imagine they are identical. I can't think of a reason why they
wouldn't be. I don't think the updated version 3.1 is out yet. I had to
order it before publication, and it hasn't arrived yet. When I bought
the first version-3 issue, it came within a week from the US to my door
in Taiwan, and the price difference between my vendor and a place like
Blackwell's was substantial. Blackwell's want US$324.81 (not including
VAT). My vendor <http://store.dictionaryoutlet.com/index.html> is
asking US$239.99 (not including VAT) right now plus Free upgrade offer:
Order the OED 3.0 now, and you will receive the OED 3.1 upgrade free
upon release, a $79.00 value. Email us for more details:
help@DollTV.com.
I had to pay for my upgrade.

And VAT and Import Duty?
BTW, if you *do* end up popping into Blackwell's "like a gentleman" be
sure to video it for later on-line broadcast.

Import Duty? Bloody hell!

I fear it might make unremarkable footage, as I'm not sure I know any
other way of popping into Blackwell's.

Popping into Blackwell's like a thief could be the cheapest way.

At the cost either charges it could be a lot cheaper to take out a
subscription to a university or other library with web access which
provides members with on-line access to the latest version.
|
Thanks: I'd rather lost sight of that possibility in the pink glow of
fantasizing about joining the Los Angeles Public Library for the same
purpose. I have an assortment of alma maters, so I'll investigate;
but I'm not at all sure it'll fly.

Wwetminster Libraries have it, but you have to use a machine at the |
library, which means booking. I don't know why that is, since you can
access the new DNB from a home machine using the number on your
library card.

My favorite method is to audit a class at a local university. I
get OED, Lexis-Nexis, and much more, right here at home for a
couple hundred a year -- plus the learning experience and the joy
of meeting others with similar interests. Hard to beat.
