Post subject: Grade vs Rate vs Rank vs Score |
|
|
Could anyone tell me the difference between the 3 words? I want to register
a domain name, rate something, but it is taken, so I am thinking to use
grade something or rank something. The site is similar to hotornot.com.
hotornot uses 10 ratings. Mine will only have 2 ratings - Positive or
Negative.
To me, Rank means putting those in an order. So rank will require an review
of all elements. While Rate/Grade is againt a standrad of one's own.
Grade is very close to rate. It is used very formally, especially in
schools. Grade a test, not rate a test.
I am also thinking of score.
What do you think?

Rank does imply an ordering. Grade is usually associated with school marks,
so something like grademypicture.com sounds a bit odd. Score can mean
acquire (Score two tickets to the game.) or grade. Scoremypicture.com
sounds a bit off too, but is closer in meaning to rate than rank (Though
maybe rank would sound better.)

With the exception of 'rate' and 'grade', all of your suggestions
suggest to me a wider range of values than simply positive /
negative. I'd therefore prefer 'grade' (since you say that 'rate'
is taken').

I'd rather that my name came nowhere near a site that was
comparable to hotornot, thanks all the same.

Usages of these words vary with community, so
123 must specify which communities he wants
to attract to his web site.
E.g. Americans usually talk about school grades
where Britons talk about school marks. Rank
means in Britain hierarchy in general, from the
social class system to military ranks: but the
world's navies have often identified their sailors
by occupational rating or rate: which is a usage
unfamiliar to civilians.
Consult a thesaurus for other appropriate words
for groups e.g. group and class. Each is so
general it needs context in order to be meaningful.
E.g. Americans often disavow the notion of
social classes but American advertisers promote
the notion of financial or occupational classes
and university degrees are traditionally classified
as first, second or third-class, like other usages
e.g. Private First Class in the US army.
