NYT Mag today has a letter:

In the recipe for saltimbocca (Food, Oct. 31), it says that the
veal cutlets "should be the size of a woman's shoe." How is one to
know what shoe Amanda Hesser has in mind? Is she thinking of a
flip-flop? A dance slipper? A moon boot? For a Size 5 foot or a
Size 11?

Might I recommend using a ruler the next time you need to measure
something -- it even has a "foot" on it, if that's what you like.

This will work unless you or somebody else who has done the same
thing has put me on spammers' lists. Ain't redirection marvellous? [g]

Thing is, Sara, what is wrong with using foot size to indicate veal
size? The exact size of a veal cutlet is seldom important, which I
think was the point behind using shoe size as a ruler. Precise
measurement in cooking is often not important, thus we have pinches, a
splash and, recently, shoe size.

I'd expect larger women to have larger feet and larger appetites (by and
large).

Selecting portion size in a restaurant by putting a foot on the table
is an interesting idea ... and give me three toes of amaretto!

I'd like a fillet of sole, if you please.
