Post subject: Define this word, please |
|
|
Hello all:
I'm re-reading Lew Wallace book "Ben-Hur", and in it, when describing
a dwelling-place, he makes use of a word unknown to me...
"lewens"
Of course, he wrote this in 1880, so perhaps the word was familiar to
his contemporaries...
Anyone able to give me the definition of this word?
Thanks,
zdrakec

I'm not sure about this, but I think Wallace's "lewen" might be another
spelling for "liwan", also spelt "iwan": a vaulted hall. The word is
usually found in connection with Islamic architecture.

'She's French, sir,'replied Martin succinctly.
