Why did the chicken cross the road?
Because the chicken lacks any reasoning or decision-making
capabilities, it seems unlikely that the chicken's action was spurred
by any particular motivation.

A man is driving down a country road at night when his car gets a
flat tire.
He stops by a local farmhouse and asks the owner if he can stay there
for the night.
"Sure", says the farmer, "As long as you don't touch my three
beautiful daughters."
The man did as he was told because, frankly, he didn't find the girls
nearly as attractive as their father seemed to.

So I was feeding the hummingbirds but not changing the feeder sugar
water quickly enough and it fermented into something like that stuff
that Hunter S Thompson was drinking in the Rum Diary, anyway, so I had
these drunk birds flying everywhere just like mosquitoes in Minnesota,
dashing up one side of me, darting down the other, crashing into the
windows, falling off their perches, didn't even know they perched,
flying backwards, flying backwards, it was like something out of the
Exorcist. After a while though, I got bored with it all. Next Summer I'm
going to Alaska to feed french bread soaked in Wild Turkey to polar
bears. Wish me luck! |

Because it is easier to do nothing than do something, because the
animal could be risking its life when crossing a road, and because of
the many directions the chicken could walk in to cross that road, the
probability he picked one of them that'd take him across is only 0.25.
No, I say the chicken knew what he was doing and, as the man said,
simply wanted to get to the other side.

That's about as far as I got in that book before I returned it to the
library. It just wasn't funny. I know the joke here is that it isn't
supposed to be funny, but there's only so much irony I can take. The
writers seem to be afraid to take risks, to look like fools. How can
humor come out of being cool?
