Dear St. Louis University Faculty and Graduate students of the
Developmental PAG,
We have arranged for Patrick Atkinson, founder and executive director
of the GOD'S CHILD Project in Guatemala, to speak with the PAG on
October 13th, 2004. He is dynamic and energetic; he has been on tour
with Deepak Chopra as an inspirational speaker.
The God's Child Project, which serves children and families in
Guatemala, is very large. I think they have over 2000 children and
several hundred mothers involved in various programs. Their website is
www.GodsChild.org.
We will have an informal discussion with Patrick about the nature of
their project. It is based on the Bismarck Educational System (BESY),
which I personally would like to know more about. They also have an
academic course (I think through Regis College) where students study
development psychology and also visit their project. I would also be
interested in hearing more about this. Also, Patrick has indicated
that there might be research opportunities available for graduate
students interested in working there (the main project, the dreamer
center is right outside of Antigua, a beautiful colonial town where
many people go to study Spanish). My hunch is that they could
especially use someone to help in evaluating their programs.
Looking forward to seeing all of you and introducing you to Patrick on
October 13th.
