My late father, a native speaker of BrE, always objected to the phrase
"under the circumstances" insisting it should be "in the circumstances."

He's no longer with us, so I can't ask him why.

Does anyone else share his view?

I would use under for past occurrences and in for the future possibilities.
But that's just me.
