I may be filing a complaint against a public non-profit which is an
incorporated entity, and I believe *organization* is the correct way to
refer the center, even though my complaint will refer to institutional
hostility. This is how AH defines institution, so the two words apparently
function as synonyms:

3. a. An established organization or foundation, especially one dedicated to
education, public service, or culture.

I suppose what I am asking is if there is any AmE rule of thumb for

differentiation when it is not otherwise specified.

In BrE I would treat "organisation" as a generic term that could be used to

refer to a body with Centre, Institute, Institution, Organisation, or
whatever, in its name.

Technically, this place is a center, or in your case, centre, which I used
to work for, and I need to be careful in the documentation of my complaint
in accordance with statue under the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission,
what we call the EEOC, even though I am not filing with them directly. In
the U.S., there are protections on the books in relation to hostile
environments, and while I am no longer an employee, some of the senior staff
are perpetuating a hostile environment for me due to executive misconduct in
the past.

If I raise my voice about it I will probably make the situation worse, but
since I am going to raise it I have to raise it taking the proper approach,
since *retaliation* is illegal.

So what? You ask several questions which I cannot answer. Are either
of these words found in "Legally Defined Words and Phrases"? The
courts do not care about AH or your (or my)opinion regarding word
meaning if the word is lagelly defined.

Writing style is not key in a legal complaint. Define a series of
terms -- XYZ, Inc. as XYZ -- and use the terms consistantly throughout
your complaint. Yes, poor style, but that is OK in this case.

I think you need help from an attorney. IMHO no "non-profit" will take
your complaint seriously until you get an attorney.

I am filing a complaint *against* a non-profit, not to them, and an attorney
would not do me any good, as my ability to go for a settlement has passed
by-- at least for the time being. I am not sure the EEOC can assist me any
longer, but I am seriously debating a walk-in next week.

I am not worried about my style, but my wording still needs to be careful.
