I need a word that means 'being cared for (because the subject is
ill)' or 'under the supervision of a doctor'. |

I don't believe there is a *single* word which means the same as "being
cared for".
You already have just about the shortest possible expression for it.

"Inpatient" has this as part of its meaning; "patient" (noun) strongly
implies it, but, according to MW11, a patient can also be someone
awaiting care. But these two words may not suit your needs.

'Being cared for' would be 'being nursed'.

Yeah, but that can be somewhat ambiguous. "Nursed" also means "breastfed".
Context would probably clarify, but someone might make a joke out of it.

At least I cared enough to send my very best. |

So I was feeding the hummingbirds but not changing the feeder sugar
water quickly enough and it fermented into something like that stuff
that Hunter S Thompson was drinking in the Rum Diary, anyway, so I had
these drunk birds flying everywhere just like mosquitoes in Minnesota,
dashing up one side of me, darting down the other, crashing into the
windows, falling off their perches, didn't even know they perched,
flying backwards, flying backwards, it was like something out of the
Exorcist. After a while though, I got bored with it all. Next Summer I'm
going to Alaska to feed french bread soaked in Wild Turkey to polar
bears. Wish me luck! |

I understood the OP to be asking for a single word that would replace the
whole phrase "being cared for".
I could have suggested "being treated", of course (even though "cared for"
may not involve treatment), but "nursed", without the "being", won't stand
on its own.

convalescing?
(Though it seems to equate to recuperate, which is a bit unilateral for what
you require, convalesce intuititively seems to me to enjoy an additional
nuance. I picture verterans in wheelchairs with throw-blankets across their
legs, staring at beatiful landscapes, and attended by demure nurses with
improbable hats.)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, but I still don't think any of
them capture the idea of 'that quality a person has when they are
under medical care'. 'Patient' is a person with that quality, not the
quality. 'Hospitalized' is a special case, but the person might be
being cared for but not in hospital. |
